The Great Event Photography Myth (Wedding Photographers)

Picture

The myth is rather simple, widespread, convincing (at first), and widely accepted.  The myth is somehow self-perpetuating.  The myth persists.

However, it is a myth.  So, it is patently not true.

According to the accepted lie, you don't need to retain  a professional photographer at substantial life events, like weddings, large gatherings, and others.  The myth purports that:

1. Cousin Jane has a brand new Sony SLR that cost $8k and is used by the best  fine art photographers in Paris (which has to be said in a northern Missisissppi drawl).  So, retaining a professional wedding photographer is superfluous, as surely images of an incredible grade will be composed, almost accidentally; or

2. Photographers get far too much for the work that can be put forth.  They just stroll about at a wedding, make faces, mess with their camera, and still expect $150 an hour?  The photos that are composed - accidentally - then amazingly leap in to a computer, are color-corrected, the white balance is fixed, cropped appropriately, etc.

There are more elements to the lie.  You have heard it from your cousin, their distant friend, and that girl at the printer ink refill place behind the counter.  In your innermost place, though, you understand it to be patently not true.  (You probably won't convince them if you decide to engage the enemy, of course.  Those who hold this belief do so with no hesitation.)

As luck would have it, a simple counter argument is this:

Do you think this even is important?  Do you believe that remembering this event is important?  Will hiring a profession photographer - an artist - going to help you in you're your memory of this event?

As you can no doubt see to be clear, you will likely answer all the above questions in the positive.  So, hiring an artist like a wedding photographer will - at the end of the day - be a perfectly reasonable expenditure, certainly given the overall cost of a wedding.  The key is to utilize a great resource to find your photographer, like Top 5 Wedding Photographers, who can capture the memories for a reasonable cost.

Moreover, employing a high quality photographer will (certainly) surprise you with regard to the typical quality difference between the typical snapshot photo for fun and a well-crafted picture.  The former is a good way to remember your buddy in Vienna after what will always be known as the 'linguini incident.'  The latter is a superb way to remember your wife on the day of your wedding, 48 years down the road.  For a sample of great images, see these Wedding Photographers.

It is your big event.  Don't fall for the myth.  Don't believe a word of it.
